Service Projects – Sub Committees

Alamo Heights Holiday Decoration

This committee conducts a contest to select the best three residences in Alamo Heights decorated for the December Holiday season. The committee conducts the contest, obtains publicity, obtains and make the awards.

Meals on Wheels

Members of this committee deliver noon meals to senior citizens who are homebound between 10:30 and 1:30 Monday thru Friday.  Their goal is to extend the Rotary values of service and community by providing much needed meals and fellowship to a select group of senior citizens who lack the funds or mobility to obtain lunch.

Scholarships

This committee disseminates applications for scholarships to area high schools; evaluates those applications received and select the awardees.  Additionally, the committee provides the opportunity to selected area educational programs such as NEISD Adult Education Program; NEISD Single Parenting Program; NEISD Academy of Creative Education; The School of Culinary Arts, St Philips College; Healy-Murphy Center and the Cyndi Taylor Krier Juvenile Detention Center to nominate recipients for $500 scholarships for vocational training or initial enrollment in San Antonio area colleges and vocational schools.  The committee also assists the Healy-Murphy Center and the NEISD Adult Education Program in providing financial assistance to those students who are unable to fully pay for GED testing.

Magazine/Book

This committee accomplishes three functions: (1) It stimulates reader interest in The Rotarian magazine; sponsors a magazine month; arranges for brief periodic reviews of the magazine on regular club programs; encourages the use of the magazine in the induction of new members; provides a copy of the magazine for non-Rotarian speakers and visitors; and looks for ways to distribute copies of the magazine in non-Rotarian venues. (2) It collects used magazines and books for donation to the San Antonio military related activities (USO, Fisher Houses, Warrior and Family Support Center, SAMMC, etc.) for use by service personnel and their families. (3) It manages the AHRC Mini-Library providing books to the public community in the Alamo Heights area (the City of Alamo Heights and the surrounding Alamo Heights Independent School District).

Gift of Sight

This committee collects used eyeglasses which are turned over to I Care San Antonio who then cleans and labels the glasses with their prescription.   Volunteer doctors examine and prescribe eye glasses for low income and homeless families in San Antonio and while the lenses are being made, temporary glasses from those donated are used to provide sight while awaiting the new prescription. They are also retained by the patient as a back up pair.

Bereavement Center Potluck Partner

Rotarians serve as a Potluck Partner at the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas about four times a year. A group of our members bring food, serve the families who are about to attend their support group and clean up afterwards. The time commitment is from 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm. About 50 people are fed each time.

VOLUNTEER SIGN UP

Many of the service committees and some other service programs require volunteers for specific activities on specific dates/times. In addition to signing up at lunch meetings and notifying the project chair or Executive Secretary, there will periodically be an opportunity to sign up online on Sign-Up Genius.
